AI search optimization for a small business means making it easy for ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot to find, trust and name you. Most of the work is free and DIY: complete listings, genuine reviews, clear service pages and an FAQ. Add a low-cost tool to track results, and hire an agency only when you lack the time.
Key takeaways๐
- AI assistants build local and small business answers from listings (Google Business Profile, Apple Business, Bing Places), review sites, your website and third-party mentions such as Reddit and local news.
-
A US small business can do most of the groundwork itself in about a month, at no cost beyond its own time.
-
A tracking tool tells you whether the work is paying off. Self-serve plans start at $19 a month as of November 2026.
-
An agency makes sense when you have no time to write pages or manage listings, or you run several locations. Fees vary widely by scope, so ask for a written scope.
-
Nobody can guarantee a spot in an AI answer. Treat any provider that promises one as a red flag.
What does AI search optimization mean for a small business?๐
AI search optimization (also called generative engine optimization, or GEO) is the work of getting AI assistants to name your business when a customer asks a question like "best plumber in Austin" or "who does same-day crown repairs near me." It overlaps heavily with local SEO, but the output is a written answer that names two or three businesses, not a list of ten links.
The assistants your customers use read a small set of sources. Google added place cards to AI Mode showing "ratings, reviews, and opening hours" (Google, May 2025). Perplexity pulls Yelp data into its answers (Maginative). Apple says business place cards appear "across Apple Maps, Messages, Wallet, Siri, and other apps" (Apple Newsroom). If those records are thin or wrong, no amount of clever content fixes it.

What can a small business do itself?๐
A small business can do almost all of the core work itself, and it should do this before paying anyone. Here is the list, roughly in order of impact for a local or service business.
Complete your Google Business Profile๐
Google says local ranking depends on relevance, distance and popularity, and that "businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results" (Google Business Profile Help). Fill in every field: primary category, services, service area, hours, holiday hours, photos and a plain description. Use your real business name, with no keywords stuffed in, as Google's guidelines require.
Claim Bing Places and Apple Business๐
Bing Places is free and can import your Google profile in a few minutes (Bing blog, October 2025). Bing matters because Copilot runs on it and ChatGPT search draws on a web index; our post on whether ChatGPT uses Bing covers what is publicly known. Then claim Apple Business so Siri and Apple Maps have correct hours and phone numbers.
Earn reviews the honest way๐
Google allows businesses to ask for reviews that reflect "a genuine experience, without offering incentives" (Google Maps content policy). Ask every real customer, never pay or discount for a review, and do not ask for Yelp reviews, since Yelp forbids it. Reply to reviews in plain words that mention the service and the town.
Write one clear page per service๐
Most small business sites say "quality service you can trust" and little else. Write one page per core service, and one per main service area if you cover several towns. Open each page with a sentence an assistant can quote: "We repair and replace tankless water heaters across Austin, Round Rock and Cedar Park." Add prices or ranges where you can, licenses, years in business and real team names.
Add an FAQ with schema๐
Answer the questions customers ask on the phone: "Do you charge for estimates?", "Do you work weekends?", "Do you service Pflugerville?" Short, direct answers give AI engines passages to lift. Add LocalBusiness schema using the most specific type for your trade (Plumber, Dentist, LegalService), as Google's documentation recommends. Our schema markup guide has copy-ready examples.
Set up Bing Webmaster Tools๐
Bing Webmaster Tools is free. Submit your sitemap and turn on IndexNow so Bing finds new pages quickly. Its AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing AI answers (Bing Webmaster blog). That is one of the few first-party citation reports any engine offers. Our Bing SEO for ChatGPT guide walks through setup.
Fix your local citations๐
Your name, address and phone number should match on your site, Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and your trade directories. An assistant that finds two addresses has to guess or skip you. Search your old address in quotes to find stale listings and update them.
Take part on Reddit, honestly๐
Reddit threads show up often in AI answers. If people in your city's subreddit ask for recommendations in your trade, answer helpfully, follow the subreddit rules and say you own the business. Our guide to earning Reddit mentions that AI answers cite covers what works and what gets you banned.
Add an llms.txt file (optional)๐
An llms.txt file is a short summary of your site for AI agents. It takes minutes with the free llms.txt generator, but there is no public evidence that it changes who gets cited, as our llms.txt explainer notes. Do it last, if at all.
When does an AI search agency make sense?๐
An agency makes sense when the work above is right for you but you do not have the hours to do it, or when you run several locations and need someone to keep every listing and page consistent. It also helps if your website is hard to edit and you need pages rebuilt.
Typical engagement types we see agencies offer:
- One-time audit. The agency runs your buyer questions across AI engines, checks your listings and site, and hands over a fix list. Good if you plan to do the work yourself.
-
Monthly monitoring and reporting. The agency tracks a set of prompts and reports changes. Useful if you want an outside view each month.
-
Ongoing optimization. The agency writes service pages, FAQs and comparison content, manages listings and reviews workflow, and reports results.
-
Project work. A defined job, such as rebuilding service pages or cleaning up listings across 20 locations.
Costs vary widely by scope, market and agency, and we have not seen a reliable public survey of GEO agency pricing for small businesses, so we do not quote a range here. Ask any agency for a written scope that lists the prompts, engines, reporting cadence and deliverables, and ask for access to the tracking data so you can check the reports yourself.
Red flags: a guarantee of being named by ChatGPT, results shown only as screenshots, and contracts that lock you in before any audit. If you want to compare agencies with self-serve tools, our guide to AI search monitoring providers in the US lists both.
When is a tool enough?๐
A tool is enough when you can do the groundwork yourself and just need to know whether it is working. Asking ChatGPT your buyer questions by hand each week is free, but it gets tedious fast and one answer on one day can mislead you.
A tracker runs the same prompts on a schedule, shows which competitors get named, and lists the cited pages. For one business, 15 to 25 good prompts and two or three competitors is usually plenty. As of November 2026, the cheapest self-serve plans we verified are TrendlyAI Solo at $19 a month, Otterly.AI Lite at $29 and Rank Prompt Starter at $49 ($39 billed yearly). Our list of affordable AI visibility tools under $100 compares them.
We build TrendlyAI, so weigh that. It tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews weekly, lets you set the country and language for your brand, and drafts a fix for each gap (an FAQ page with schema, a comparison page, a Reddit answer and more). It does not track Gemini, Grok, Copilot or Google AI Mode, it takes 1 sample per prompt per week, and it is a young product from a small team. There is a 7-day free trial with no card.
DIY, agency or tool: which should you choose?๐
This table matches common small business situations to the option that usually fits. Most businesses end up with DIY plus a tool.
| Your situation | DIY | Tool | Agency |
|---|---|---|---|
| One location, owner has a few hours a month | Yes, start here | Yes, to track results | Not needed |
| One location, no time at all | Listings only | Optional | Yes, for pages and listings |
| Several locations or franchises | Hard to keep consistent | Yes, per location or brand | Often worth it |
| Website you cannot edit easily | Limited | Yes | Yes, for project work |
| Regulated trade (law, dental, finance) | Yes, with care on ad rules | Yes | Pick one that knows your rules |
| Tight budget | Yes | Free check or $19 to $49 plan | Usually not |
Industry rules matter. Lawyers should read how law firms get recommended by AI search for bar advertising limits, dentists how dental practices show up in AI answers, real estate agents how agents get recommended by AI search, and online stores AI search visibility for Shopify stores.
What is a 30-day AI search plan for a small business?๐
A 30-day plan gets the groundwork done in four weekly blocks of a few hours each. It assumes one location and one person doing the work.
Week 1: measure and fix listings.
-
Write 10 to 20 questions customers ask, with your city in them. Our guide to finding the prompts your buyers ask helps.
-
Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and note who gets named. Or run the free check.
-
Complete your Google Business Profile. Import it to Bing Places. Claim Apple Business.
Week 2: reviews and consistency.
-
Set up a simple way to ask every customer for a Google review (a text or email after each job).
-
Reply to your last 20 reviews.
-
Fix your name, address and phone number on Yelp and your top two trade directories.
Week 3: pages and FAQ.
-
Rewrite your top three service pages so the first sentence says what you do, where and for whom.
-
Add an FAQ with eight to ten real questions and LocalBusiness schema.
-
Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and turn on IndexNow.
Week 4: outside mentions and review.
-
Answer one or two relevant Reddit threads as a disclosed owner.
-
Ask a local partner, chamber of commerce or supplier to list you on their site.
-
Rerun your Week 1 questions and compare. Expect small changes; AI answers move from week to week, so track the trend, as our guide to tracking ChatGPT performance over time explains.
After 30 days, keep asking for reviews, add one new page or FAQ a month, and check your prompts weekly or monthly. The GEO audit checklist and the GEO hub cover what to do next.
Frequently asked questions๐
Can a small business do AI search optimization without an agency?๐
Yes. The core work is completing your listings, earning genuine reviews, writing clear service pages, adding an FAQ with schema and keeping your details consistent. Most owners can do it in a few hours a week over a month.
How much does AI search optimization cost for a small business?๐
The DIY work is free apart from your time. Tracking tools start at $19 a month as of November 2026. Agency fees vary widely by scope, market and agency, so get a written scope and compare a few quotes.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?๐
There is no fixed timeline. Listing and review fixes can show up as soon as engines recrawl, while new pages and outside mentions take longer. Track the same prompts weekly or monthly and look at the trend over several checks.
Does Google Business Profile affect ChatGPT answers?๐
Google Business Profile feeds Google Search, Maps, AI Overviews and AI Mode directly. ChatGPT and Copilot draw on web and map data from other sources, which is why Bing Places, Apple Business and review sites matter too.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?๐
We know of no way to buy a spot in ChatGPT's written answer as of November 2026. The route that works is accurate listings, genuine reviews and clear pages that other sites mention.
