Bing SEO for ChatGPT means making sure Bing has indexed your best pages and ranks them for the short queries buyers ask. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap, turn on IndexNow, fix crawl errors, allow Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot, then use Bing's AI Performance report to see citations.
Key takeaways๐
- Bing is the search source with the strongest public evidence behind ChatGPT search, though OpenAI no longer names its providers. See does ChatGPT use Bing? for the full story.
-
You can verify a site in Bing Webmaster Tools in minutes by importing it from Google Search Console.
-
IndexNow tells Bing (and other participating engines) about new or changed URLs right away, up to 10,000 URLs per request.
-
Bing's AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, shows citations in Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries, plus the grounding queries behind them.
Why does Bing SEO matter for ChatGPT?๐
Bing SEO matters for ChatGPT because Bing has the most public evidence of any search provider linked to ChatGPT. In 2023, OpenAI said ChatGPT browsing used "the Bing search API" (OpenAI); since October 2024 it only says "third-party search providers" (OpenAI). A February 2025 Seer Interactive study found that 87% or more of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top organic results for the same question (Seer Interactive).
That is not proof that Bing is the only source, or a promise that a Bing ranking becomes a ChatGPT mention. It is a strong reason to make sure Bing is not the weak link.
Here is the whole process at a glance:
| Step | Where | What it does | Time to set up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Verify your site | Bing Webmaster Tools | Gives you access to Bing's data for your site | 5 to 15 minutes |
| 2. Submit a sitemap | Bing Webmaster Tools | Lists every URL you want indexed | 5 minutes |
| 3. Turn on IndexNow | Your CMS, CDN or a script | Pings Bing when pages change | 15 to 60 minutes |
| 4. Fix crawl and index issues | URL Inspection, Site Scan, Sitemaps report | Finds pages Bing cannot crawl or index | Ongoing |
| 5. Check robots.txt | robots.txt Tester | Makes sure Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed | 10 minutes |
| 6. Read AI Performance | Bing Webmaster Tools | Shows AI citations and grounding queries | Monthly review |
| 7. Improve content and schema | Your site | Makes pages easy for AI systems to quote | Ongoing |
| 8. Earn links and mentions | Outreach, PR, reviews | Builds the authority that helps you rank | Ongoing |
Step 1: How do you set up Bing Webmaster Tools?๐
You set up Bing Webmaster Tools by signing in at bing.com/webmasters, adding your site and verifying that you own it. Microsoft lists sign-in with a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account, and five ways to verify: Domain Connect (its recommended option), an XML file upload, a meta tag, a DNS TXT record, or importing from Google Search Console (Microsoft Bing).
The fastest route is the Google Search Console import. Bing says imported sites are verified automatically, sitemaps come across too, and you can import up to 100 sites at a time, which suits agencies (Microsoft Bing).
Once verified, you get Search Performance data, URL Inspection, a Sitemaps report, Site Scan, a robots.txt Tester, Crawl Control and backlink data (Microsoft Bing).
Step 2: How do you submit a sitemap to Bing?๐
You submit a sitemap by opening the Sitemaps section in Bing Webmaster Tools and pasting the full URL of your XML sitemap, for example https://example.com/sitemap.xml. If you imported from Google Search Console, your sitemaps may already be there.
Include only live, canonical URLs that return a 200 status, keep lastmod dates honest, and add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt. Check the Sitemaps report a few days later for missing or blocked pages.
Step 3: How do you set up IndexNow?๐
IndexNow is an open protocol that lets you tell participating search engines the moment a URL is added, updated or deleted, instead of waiting for a crawl. Microsoft describes it as a way to instantly alert "Bing and other IndexNow Search Engines" when content changes (Microsoft Bing).
The setup, according to the IndexNow documentation (IndexNow):
-
Generate a key of 8 to 128 characters (letters, numbers and dashes).
-
Host it as a UTF-8 text file, for example
https://example.com/your-key.txt, to prove you own the site. -
Send changed URLs to an endpoint such as
https://www.bing.com/indexnow?url=...&key=..., or POST a JSON list of up to 10,000 URLs at once.
Submitted URLs are "automatically shared with all other participating search engines," so one ping covers them all (IndexNow). The current list of participants published on indexnow.org includes Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, the Internet Archive and Amazonbot (IndexNow). Google is not on that list.
Many CMS plugins and CDNs offer IndexNow as a setting, so you rarely need to write this by hand.
Microsoft ties IndexNow directly to AI answers. In its AI Performance announcement, it says IndexNow helps "ensure that AI systems reference the most current version of a page when generating answers" (Microsoft Bing). If your pricing or product details change often, this step matters more than most.
Step 4: How do you fix Bing crawl and index issues?๐
You fix Bing crawl and index issues by finding pages Bing has not indexed, checking why, and fixing the cause. Start with buyer pages: home, product, pricing and comparison pages. Use these tools in order:
- URL Inspection. Paste a key URL and see whether it is indexed and whether Bing ran into problems.
-
Site Scan. Run an on-demand scan to find SEO errors on your site, grouped by severity.
-
Sitemaps report. Compare URLs submitted with URLs Bing knows about.
-
Crawl Control. If your server is slow or rate limits bots, adjust when and how fast Bing crawls.
Common causes: main text that only appears after JavaScript runs, leftover noindex tags, redirect chains, duplicates without a clear canonical, and firewall or CDN bot protection that blocks Bingbot without showing up in robots.txt.
Step 5: How should robots.txt handle Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot?๐
Your robots.txt should allow both Bingbot (for Bing's index) and OAI-SearchBot (for ChatGPT search). They are separate systems, and blocking either one can cut you out.
Watch the Bingbot rule. Bing has explained that Bingbot follows only one group of rules, in this order: the bingbot group, then the msnbot group, then the * group, discarding the rest (Microsoft Bing). If you add a User-agent: bingbot section, your * rules no longer apply to Bingbot, so copy over any rules you still need.
Allow OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," and changes take about 24 hours (OpenAI). GPTBot, the training crawler, is separate, so you can block it and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
A simple example:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /admin/
User-agent: bingbot
Disallow: /admin/
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap.xml
Test it with the robots.txt Tester in Bing Webmaster Tools, which checks a URL the way Bingbot would (Microsoft Bing).
Check your meta tags too. Since 2023, Microsoft has said content tagged NOARCHIVE "will not be included in Bing Chat answers," while NOCACHE limits answers to the URL, snippet and title (Microsoft Bing). Bing's February 2026 guidelines update reportedly applies the same rules to Copilot (Search Engine Journal). Remove stray NOARCHIVE tags from pages you want cited.
Step 6: What does Bing's AI Performance report show?๐
Bing's AI Performance report shows how often your pages are cited as sources in AI-generated answers across Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and "select partner integrations." Microsoft launched it in public preview on February 10, 2026 (Microsoft Bing).
The dashboard includes:
| Metric | What Microsoft says it shows |
|---|---|
| Total citations | How many times your content was shown as a source in AI answers in the date range |
| Average cited pages | Average number of unique pages from your site cited per day |
| Grounding queries | The key phrases the AI used when retrieving content it then cited (a sample) |
| Page-level citations | Citation counts for each URL on your site |
| Timeline | How citation activity changes over time |
In June 2026, Microsoft added four more preview features: Intents (grounding queries grouped into types such as informational, commercial and local), Topics (related queries grouped into themes), Citation Share (your share of all citations for a grounding query) and Compare (overlay a past period on the current one) (Microsoft Bing).
How to use it. Start with grounding queries: the short phrases AI systems actually searched. If one matches what you sell but a thin page gets cited, improve that page. If you see no citations at all, recheck steps 1 to 5 first.
What it does not show. Microsoft does not name the partner integrations, so this is not a ChatGPT report. To see whether ChatGPT names your brand, you still need to check ChatGPT itself.
Step 7: What content and schema help Bing and AI answers?๐
Content that helps Bing and AI answers is organized in clear, self-contained sections that answer one question each, backed by schema markup. Microsoft's own guidance, written by Bing principal product manager Krishna Madhavan in October 2025, covers this directly (Microsoft Advertising):
- Headings "act like chapter titles that define clear content slices." Use H2s and H3s that match real questions.
-
Q&A pairs: "Direct questions with clear answers mirror the way people search." Assistants can lift them almost word for word.
-
Schema in JSON-LD "helps search engines and AI systems understand your content." Organization, Product, FAQPage and Article are good starting points. Our schema markup guide goes deeper.
-
Do not hide answers in tabs or accordions, since "AI systems may not render hidden content."
-
Do not put key facts only in images or PDFs. Keep them in HTML text.
For a brand page, state plainly what you sell, who it is for and what it costs. A model cannot recommend you for "small law firms in Texas" if your site never says you serve them.
Step 8: Do backlinks matter for Bing and ChatGPT?๐
Backlinks matter because they help pages rank in Bing, and the Seer study suggests ChatGPT tends to cite pages that already rank well in Bing for the underlying query. Bing Webmaster Tools includes a backlinks report so you can see who links to you and compare against competitors.
Focus on links that also matter to AI answers on their own: review sites, "best of" lists, trade publications and real community answers. These pages often get cited directly, so a mention there can help twice. Skip paid link schemes.

How do you know if Bing SEO is improving your ChatGPT visibility?๐
You know Bing SEO is working when more key pages are indexed in Bing, the AI Performance report shows more citations, and ChatGPT starts naming your brand. The first two show in Bing Webmaster Tools. The third needs a separate check.
Run the same buyer prompts in ChatGPT on a schedule and record which brands get named. TrendlyAI does this with weekly scans across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews. It does not track Copilot, so use Bing's report for that side. I track TrendlyAI's own domain this way, and our score is still low: indexing is the start, not the finish.

Frequently asked questions๐
Does IndexNow work for Google?๐
Google is not on the participant list published at indexnow.org. Keep submitting your sitemap in Google Search Console for Google.
Does Bing's AI Performance report include ChatGPT?๐
Microsoft says the report covers Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and "select partner integrations," but it does not name those partners. Do not assume ChatGPT citations are included.
Should I block GPTBot if I want to appear in ChatGPT?๐
That is your choice. OpenAI's docs say GPTBot relates to model training and OAI-SearchBot controls whether your site appears in ChatGPT search answers. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
How long does it take for Bing changes to show in ChatGPT?๐
There is no published timeline. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot robots.txt changes take about 24 hours. Whether ChatGPT then names your brand depends on many factors, so measure over weeks.
