Does ChatGPT Use Bing? How ChatGPT Search Finds Sources

By Bhuwan Aryal, founder of TrendlyAIPublished 9 min read

Partly, as far as public sources show. Bing powered ChatGPT browsing in 2023, and OpenAI now says ChatGPT search uses "third-party search providers" without naming all of them. An independent study found most ChatGPT citations matched Bing results, and a 2025 report said OpenAI also used scraped Google results. Rank in Bing, and allow OAI-SearchBot.

Key takeaways๐Ÿ”—

Does ChatGPT use Bing for web search?๐Ÿ”—

ChatGPT has used Bing for web search at least since 2023, and Bing very likely still plays a role, but OpenAI no longer says so by name. The history matters, because most "ChatGPT uses Bing" claims online point back to statements from 2023 that have since been replaced by vaguer wording.

Here is what each company has said publicly, in order:

DateWho said itWhat they said
March 2023OpenAIThe browsing plugin "retrieves content from the web using the Bing search API" (OpenAI)
May 2023Microsoft"Bing is coming to ChatGPT as the default search experience," rolling out to ChatGPT Plus first (Microsoft)
October 2024OpenAIChatGPT search uses "third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners" (OpenAI)
Current help docsOpenAIChatGPT "may share that general location with third-party search providers" and does not share your IP address or account information with them (OpenAI Help Center)
Current crawler docsOpenAIOAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features" (OpenAI)

So the confirmed part is narrow. Bing was the named search provider for ChatGPT browsing in 2023. Since late 2024, OpenAI describes "third-party search providers" in the plural and does not say which ones, or how much each contributes.

What changed when ChatGPT search launched?๐Ÿ”—

ChatGPT search, launched in October 2024, changed the official wording from "Bing" to "third-party search providers" and added OpenAI's own crawler to the picture. That is the key shift to understand if you read older SEO advice.

In its launch post, OpenAI described three inputs: third-party search providers, content provided directly by partners (OpenAI has signed deals with news publishers), and its own systems (OpenAI). The crawler side is documented separately. OpenAI lists three user agents:

User agentWhat OpenAI says it doesAffects ChatGPT search?
OAI-SearchBot"Used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features"Yes. Blocked sites "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though can still appear as navigational links"
GPTBotUsed to make OpenAI's foundation models "more useful and safe" (training)OpenAI's docs do not tie it to search
ChatGPT-UserVisits pages for "certain user actions in ChatGPT and Custom GPTs""ChatGPT-User is not used to determine whether content may appear in Search"

All three rows come from OpenAI's crawler documentation (OpenAI). OpenAI also notes that it "can take ~24 hours from a site's robots.txt update" for its systems to adjust.

What this means: a search provider can tell ChatGPT that your page exists and ranks for a query, but OpenAI's own rules decide whether your site can appear in answers at all. You need both.

What do studies say about ChatGPT citations and Bing results?๐Ÿ”—

Independent studies show a strong link between ChatGPT citations and Bing rankings when you search the same question, but a weak link when you compare against the user's exact prompt. Both findings can be true at once, and the reason why is useful.

Seer Interactive (February 2025). Seer ran about 100 questions through ChatGPT search, collected more than 500 citations, and checked whether each cited URL appeared in Bing's and Google's organic results for the same question. It found that "87%+ of SearchGPT's citations matched Bing's top organic results," mostly in the top 10 and many in positions 11 to 20. Only 56% matched Google results (Seer Interactive). Seer called its 100-query sample limited, so treat this as directional.

Ahrefs (August 2025). Ahrefs took 15,000 long-tail queries, asked them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, and compared citations with Google and Bing top 10 results for the same prompt. For ChatGPT, 8% of citations appeared in Google's top 10 and 8.1% in Bing's top 10 (Ahrefs).

StudySampleWhat was comparedChatGPT vs Bing
Seer Interactive, Feb 2025~100 questions, 500+ citationsCitations vs organic results for the same question87%+ matched Bing top results
Ahrefs, Aug 202515,000 long-tail queriesCitations vs top 10 for the original prompt8.1% in Bing top 10

Why the gap? ChatGPT does not usually paste your whole prompt into a search box. Seer itself pointed out that ChatGPT likely simplifies complex questions before it searches. A long, conversational prompt gets turned into one or more shorter search queries, and the cited pages rank for those shorter queries, not for the full prompt. The lesson is to rank for the short, plain queries a buyer's question breaks down into, such as "best payroll software for restaurants," not for the long prompt itself.

Does ChatGPT also use Google results?๐Ÿ”—

According to a 2025 report, yes, at least for some topics, though OpenAI has not said so in its public documentation. In August 2025, Search Engine Land summarized reporting from The Information that "OpenAI quietly used (and may still be using) a Google Search scraping service to power ChatGPT's answers on real-time topics like news, sports, and finance," via a company called SerpApi (Search Engine Land).

The same article noted that during Google's antitrust trial, ChatGPT executive Nick Turley indicated that Bing had "significant quality issues" and that access to Google's index would help OpenAI's search plans (Search Engine Land).

Put together, the honest summary is this: OpenAI uses more than one search source, Bing is the one with the strongest public and study evidence, Google results have been reported for some real-time topics, and the exact mix is not public and has changed over time. Anyone who tells you the precise split is guessing.

Why does Bing ranking still matter for ChatGPT visibility?๐Ÿ”—

Bing ranking matters because it is the best documented route into ChatGPT's search results that you can actually influence. You cannot see inside ChatGPT's retrieval, but you can see whether Bing has indexed your pages and where they rank.

Three reasons to care:

  1. Evidence points to Bing. OpenAI used the Bing API by name, Microsoft announced Bing as ChatGPT's default search, and Seer's study found most citations matched Bing's top results.

  2. If Bing has not indexed a page, it cannot be a Bing result. Many sites set up Google Search Console years ago and never touched Bing Webmaster Tools. Pages missing from Bing's index are missing from any system that depends on it.

  3. Microsoft now reports AI citations. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report (public preview since February 2026) showing citations in Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and "select partner integrations" (Microsoft Bing). Microsoft does not name the partners, so do not read it as a ChatGPT report, but it is a free view of how Microsoft's own AI uses your pages.

Ranking in Bing does not guarantee a mention in ChatGPT. ChatGPT also uses training data, partner content and other search sources, and it picks which brands to name in its own way. Bing is the part of the chain you can check and fix today. For the full setup, see our Bing SEO for ChatGPT guide.

How do you make sure ChatGPT search can find your site?๐Ÿ”—

To make sure ChatGPT search can find your site, allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, get your pages indexed in Bing, and check that your brand pages answer buyer questions plainly. Here is the short checklist.

1. Allow OAI-SearchBot. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you see a group that blocks OAI-SearchBot, or a blanket Disallow: / under User-agent: * with no exception, ChatGPT search cannot show your pages. A simple allow looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

You can still block GPTBot if you do not want your content used for training. OpenAI treats the two separately (OpenAI). Also check your CDN or firewall. Some bot protection settings block AI crawlers by default, even when robots.txt allows them.

2. Get indexed in Bing. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and set up IndexNow so Bing hears about new and updated pages quickly. Then search Bing for the short queries your buyers use and see whether you show up.

3. Make your pages easy to quote. Put a plain description of what you sell, who it is for and what it costs near the top of key pages. Use question-style headings and short answers. Our guide on how to get cited by ChatGPT covers this in more depth.

4. Earn mentions on the pages ChatGPT already cites. For "best X" questions, ChatGPT often cites review sites, lists and forums rather than brand sites. See what sources ChatGPT cites for the patterns.

5. Measure, then repeat. Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask and record which brands it names, on a fixed schedule. We do this for TrendlyAI's own domain and publish the score, which is still low, so I know firsthand that the fixes above take time to show up.

Is this the same for other AI assistants?๐Ÿ”—

No, each assistant uses its own mix of search sources, so Bing work helps some assistants more than others. Microsoft reports Copilot citations inside Bing Webmaster Tools, so Bing work clearly matters there. Claude's web search has been reported to use Brave Search, not Bing (see how to get recommended by Claude). Google AI Overviews sit inside Google Search. A brand that only checks Google can miss problems in Bing, and the reverse is also true. Our GEO hub covers each engine.

If you want a quick baseline, the free TrendlyAI check runs 5 prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity in about 30 seconds, with no signup, and shows whether your brand or a competitor gets named.

Frequently asked questions๐Ÿ”—

Does ChatGPT use Bing or Google?๐Ÿ”—

Both have been linked to ChatGPT. OpenAI named the Bing search API for ChatGPT browsing in 2023, and Microsoft announced Bing as ChatGPT's default search. Since October 2024, OpenAI only says "third-party search providers." A 2025 report from The Information said OpenAI also used scraped Google results for some real-time topics. The current mix is not public.

If I rank first in Bing, will ChatGPT cite me?๐Ÿ”—

Not necessarily. Seer Interactive found most ChatGPT citations matched Bing's top results for the same question, but ChatGPT rewrites prompts into shorter searches, uses other sources and picks which brands to name on its own. A strong Bing ranking improves your odds. It is not a guarantee.

Will blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?๐Ÿ”—

According to OpenAI's crawler docs, no. GPTBot relates to model training. OAI-SearchBot controls whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search answers. You can block one and allow the other.

How long does a robots.txt change take to affect ChatGPT search?๐Ÿ”—

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its systems to adjust for OAI-SearchBot.

Does Bing Webmaster Tools show ChatGPT citations?๐Ÿ”—

Not by name. The AI Performance report covers Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and unnamed "select partner integrations." Microsoft has not said whether ChatGPT is one of those partners, so use a separate tool or manual checks for ChatGPT.
