You cannot edit ChatGPT's answer directly, and OpenAI has no correction form for companies. What you can do: find out whether the error comes from training data or from a web page ChatGPT searched, fix that source, make your facts match everywhere, and send feedback in ChatGPT. Search errors can clear once sources change. Training errors take longer.
Key takeaways๐
- ChatGPT answers come from two places: what the model learned in training and what ChatGPT search finds on the web. The fix depends on which one caused the error.
-
OpenAI's privacy policy offers correction requests for inaccurate information "about you," which is aimed at people, not brands. For brand errors, your in-product tools are the thumbs down button and, for policy violations, the content reporting form.
-
OpenAI says reported domains "may be reviewed" by its Model Quality team, which "may apply filters or other mitigations" so ChatGPT relies less on unreliable sources.
-
The most reliable fix is upstream: correct your own pages, the third-party pages ChatGPT cites, and your profiles, so every source states the same facts.
-
Check again on a schedule. One corrected answer proves little, because ChatGPT can answer the same question differently each time.
Why does ChatGPT get facts about my brand wrong?๐
ChatGPT gets brand facts wrong because it either learned outdated or mixed-up information during training, or it searched the web and found a page that is wrong. Telling the two apart is the first step, because they are fixed in different ways.
Training data. OpenAI says its models are developed using "information that is publicly available on the internet," information from partners, and information from users, trainers and researchers (OpenAI Help Center). The same article explains that the models "do not store or retain copies of the data they are trained on." They learn patterns and then "predict the next most likely word." So if old pricing, a former product name or a competitor's feature was common on the web when the model was trained, the model can repeat it with confidence. There is no single record you can open and edit.
OpenAI's privacy policy says this plainly: "the words most likely to appear next may not be the most factually accurate," and "you should not rely on the factual accuracy of output from our models" (OpenAI Privacy Policy).
Web search. ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information," and responses that use search can include citations (OpenAI Help Center). OpenAI's own help page warns that "search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect." If a review site, a directory or an old press release has the wrong facts and ranks for the query, ChatGPT can pick them up.
Here is how to tell which one you are dealing with:
| Signal in the answer | Likely source | What fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| Citations or a Sources button with links | ChatGPT search | Fix or outrank the cited pages |
| No citations, confident general statements | Training data | Consistent facts across the web, over time |
| Old facts that were true a year or more ago | Usually training data | Update every page that still shows the old facts |
| Your brand confused with a similar name | Entity confusion | Clear, consistent naming, Organization schema, matching profiles |
If you are unsure, ask the same question again and select Try again or Search the web, which OpenAI lists as options for regenerating a response with web results (OpenAI Help Center). If the search version is correct and the plain version is wrong, the problem is in training data.
Can you ask OpenAI to correct ChatGPT?๐
You can send feedback and reports, but OpenAI does not offer a way for a company to edit what ChatGPT says about it. Here are the options OpenAI documents, and what each is meant for.
| Option | Where | Meant for | Useful for brand errors? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thumbs down on a response | Under any ChatGPT message | General feedback on a response | Yes, as a signal. No promise of a fix |
| Report (Safety or Legal concern) | Thumbs down, then "Select an issue" | Content that may violate OpenAI's Terms of Use or the law | Only if the content is defamatory, deceptive or infringing |
| Content reporting form | openai.com/form/report-content | Policy violations or illegal content, with URLs | Same as above. Categories include "Spam, fraud & deception" and trademark |
| Trademark form | Trademark and counterfeit disputes | Trademark infringement or counterfeit goods | Only for trademark issues |
| Privacy correction request | privacy.openai.com or [email protected] | Inaccurate information "about you" as a person | Not designed for company facts |
Sources for this table: OpenAI's reporting guide (OpenAI Help Center), the report form itself (OpenAI) and the privacy policy (OpenAI).
Two details are worth knowing. First, OpenAI used to have a separate model behavior feedback form. It now says "We've deprecated this web form in favor of other channels" and points people to the thumbs down button and the report options instead (OpenAI). Second, the reporting guide says that "reported domains and other content may be reviewed by OpenAI's Model Quality team, which may apply filters or other mitigations to help prevent ChatGPT from relying on unreliable sources in future responses" (OpenAI Help Center). That is the closest thing to a correction path for a bad source. It is not a promise, and it is meant for unreliable or deceptive sites, not for a review that is simply out of date.
The privacy correction route deserves a clear warning. The policy says that if ChatGPT output "contains factually inaccurate information about you," you can request a correction or removal, and OpenAI "will consider your request based on applicable law and the technical capabilities of our models" (OpenAI Privacy Policy). That wording is about personal data. It may apply to errors about you as a founder, but probably not to your company's pricing.
When you use the thumbs down button, write the wrong statement, the correct fact and a link that proves it. Then move on to the fixes you control.
How do you correct the sources ChatGPT uses?๐
To correct the sources ChatGPT uses, start with the pages it cites, then fix your own site, then fix the third-party pages that repeat the error. This works for both search answers and, over time, the web content future models learn from.
1. Collect the evidence. Run the questions buyers actually ask, such as "What does [brand] cost?" Save the answer, the date and every cited URL.
2. Fix your own pages first. Make sure your homepage, pricing, about and product pages state current facts in plain sentences near the top. Update, redirect or add a dated note to old pages that still describe retired plans or products.
3. Fix the third-party pages ChatGPT cites. ChatGPT often cites review sites, directories and lists rather than brand sites. Our breakdown of what sources ChatGPT cites covers the patterns. Update your listings on review sites and directories you control. For articles you do not control, email the author or editor with the specific error and a source.
4. Publish a clear answer to the question that went wrong. If ChatGPT keeps getting your pricing wrong, a plain pricing page with the numbers in text (not only in an image) helps. If it confuses which features you have, a short FAQ helps. Our guide on how to get cited by ChatGPT explains how to write pages that are easy to quote.
5. Make sure ChatGPT search can read your corrections. OpenAI's crawler docs say sites that block OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," and that a robots.txt change can take "~24 hours" to take effect (OpenAI). If your corrected page is blocked, ChatGPT search keeps citing the wrong pages. Bing indexing matters too; see does ChatGPT use Bing.
What does entity consistency have to do with wrong answers?๐
Entity consistency means your brand is described with the same name, category, location and key facts everywhere it appears, so AI systems treat all those mentions as one company. Inconsistent descriptions are a common cause of mixed-up answers, especially when your brand name is shared with another company or a common word.
Practical steps:
- Use one name and one short description. Pick the exact brand name and a one-sentence description of what you do, then use them on your site, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, review profiles and press pages.
-
Add Organization structured data to your home page. Google says this "can help Google better understand your organization's administrative details and disambiguate your organization in search results," and its
sameAsproperty lists your profiles on other sites (Google Search Central). Our schema markup guide covers the setup. -
Clean up old names. If you rebranded, say so clearly on your about page ("formerly X") so both names connect to the same company.
-
Claim profiles where you can. Google lets verified users suggest edits to a knowledge panel and says it "reviews feedback from verified users within a few days" (Google Help). That helps Google surfaces directly, and it removes one more conflicting source.
The GEO audit checklist includes an entity consistency check you can run in an afternoon.
What about Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Claude?๐
Each AI assistant has its own feedback buttons and its own sources, so a fix in one does not carry over to the others automatically. Google, for example, lets you give a thumbs down on an AI Overview if it is "unhelpful, inaccurate, biased, or otherwise problematic," and recommends adding details in the text field (Google Search Help). Google also states that "AI Overviews can and will make mistakes."
The source work is shared, though. A corrected pricing page, a fixed review listing and consistent profiles help every engine that reads the web. Claude's search uses its own crawler, Claude-SearchBot, and Anthropic says blocking it "may reduce your site's visibility and accuracy in user search results" (Anthropic). Perplexity says PerplexityBot is "designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" (Perplexity). Check that none of these are blocked. Our GEO hub covers each engine.
How long does a fix take, and how do you know it worked?๐
Fixes to search-based answers can show up as soon as the corrected pages are crawled and ranked, while fixes to training-based answers depend on future model updates and have no published timeline. OpenAI ships model updates regularly and lists them in its model release notes, but it does not say what web content each one learned from.
Because ChatGPT can answer the same question differently each time, do not judge a fix on one check. OpenAI itself says "the same question may yield different answers across different queries" (OpenAI Help Center). Run the same questions on a schedule and watch the share of answers that get the fact right. Our guide to tracking ChatGPT performance over time explains how to set that up.
I track TrendlyAI's own domain this way and publish the score, which is still low. The pattern I see is the one above: fixing our own pages is fast, and getting other sites to describe the product the same way is the slow part.
For a quick look at what ChatGPT and Perplexity say about your brand today, the free TrendlyAI check runs 5 prompts in about 30 seconds, with no signup.
Frequently asked questions๐
Can I make OpenAI change what ChatGPT says about my company?๐
Not directly. OpenAI offers a thumbs down button for feedback and a reporting form for content that may break its Terms of Use or the law. Its privacy correction request is for inaccurate information about a person. For company facts, the reliable path is fixing the sources ChatGPT learns from and cites.
Why does ChatGPT still show our old pricing?๐
Either the model learned the old price during training, or ChatGPT search found a page that still shows it. Check whether the answer has citations. If it does, update or contact the cited pages. If it does not, update every page on the web that still lists the old price and wait for later model updates.
Does reporting a wrong answer remove it?๐
There is no guarantee. OpenAI says reported domains may be reviewed by its Model Quality team, which may apply filters so ChatGPT relies less on unreliable sources. That is aimed at unreliable sites, not every factual error. Treat feedback as one signal and fix the sources too.
What if ChatGPT confuses my brand with another company?๐
That is an entity problem. Use one exact brand name and description everywhere, add Organization schema with sameAs links to your profiles, and make your category and location clear on your homepage and about page.
