Last updated: November 2026
An AI search monitoring provider tracks whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and other assistants name your brand, which competitors they name instead, and which pages they cite. US prices run from $19 to about $500 a month for self-serve trackers, with enterprise platforms on custom quotes. Choose on engines, prompt count, cadence and country settings, not on dashboards.
Key takeaways๐
- AI search monitoring (also called GEO tracking or AI visibility tracking) sends a fixed set of buyer questions to AI engines on a schedule and records who gets named and cited.
-
There are four kinds of provider: standalone trackers, SEO suites with an AI module, enterprise platforms, and agencies that run the tracking for you.
-
As of November 2026, entry prices for the self-serve tools we checked range from $19 a month (TrendlyAI Solo) to $97 a month (Rankability Starter). Profound has no public price.
-
The four specs that decide most purchases: which engines are tracked, how many prompts you get, how often they run, and whether you can set the country.
-
Ask any provider how many samples it takes per prompt and how it counts a mention. Vague answers are a red flag.
What does AI search monitoring actually cover?๐
AI search monitoring covers six things: the engines asked, the prompts asked, how often they are asked, where they are asked from, what the answers cite, and how you compare with competitors. A provider that is weak on any one of these will give you a partial picture.
-
Engines. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are the common base. Claude, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Grok and Meta AI vary by provider and often by plan. If your buyers use Copilot at work or Gemini on Android, check those are included, not sold as add-ons.
-
Prompts. Each prompt is a question a buyer might ask, such as "best payroll software for a 20-person company." Plans cap prompts, from 15 to several hundred. Our guide on finding the prompts your buyers ask helps you pick them.
-
Cadence. Daily, weekly or on demand. Daily catches swings; weekly is enough to see a trend for most small teams. Ask how many times each prompt runs per check, because one answer is a sample, not a verdict.
-
Country and language. AI answers differ by location. A US buyer asking about accountants should see US results. Some tools let you set a country per project or per prompt, and some count each location as a separate prompt.
-
Citations. Which URLs the answer links to or relies on. This tells you which pages, review sites and Reddit threads shape the answer, as covered in what sources ChatGPT cites.
-
Competitor share. How often each competitor is named across the same prompts. This is your AI share of voice, and it matters more than any single score.
What types of AI search monitoring providers are there?๐
There are four types of provider, and they suit different buyers. Most US small businesses and agencies end up with a standalone tracker or an SEO suite they already pay for.
| Provider type | Examples | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone AI trackers | TrendlyAI, Otterly.AI, Peec AI, Rank Prompt, LLMrefs | Brands and small agencies that want AI tracking only | No keyword research, backlinks or site audits |
| SEO suites with AI tracking | Semrush, Ahrefs Brand Radar, SE Visible, Surfer, Frase, Rankability | Teams already working in an SEO or content tool | AI tracking is often an add-on or limited on lower plans |
| Enterprise platforms | Profound | Large brands with security reviews and big prompt sets | No public price, longer setup |
| Agencies | GEO or SEO agencies that run tracking and fixes | Owners who want someone else to do the work | You pay for labor as well as the tool; quality varies |

A few notes on reading the table. Frase and Surfer prices above are monthly billing; both are cheaper billed yearly. Rank Prompt counts usage in credits, so 25 prompts on all six engines run weekly use more credits than Starter includes, as our TrendlyAI vs Rank Prompt comparison works out. Hall was acquired by Tracksuit in July 2026 and no longer takes new signups, so it is left out; see Hall AI alternatives.
Where does TrendlyAI fit, and where is it weak?๐
TrendlyAI is a standalone tracker for US brands and small agencies that want AI visibility tracking plus a drafted fix for each gap, from $19 a month. We build it, so weigh that.
It tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews on every plan, scans weekly, and lets you set the country and language per brand, so a US brand is scanned as a US buyer would see it. When a competitor is named and you are not, it drafts a fix: a comparison page, an FAQ page with schema, a Reddit answer, an llms.txt file, a best-of list or a product page rewrite. There is a 7-day free trial with no card, and a free check with no signup.
The weak points are real. It tracks only 4 engines, with no Gemini, Grok, Copilot, Meta AI or Google AI Mode. It scans weekly with 1 sample per prompt, so it will not catch day-to-day swings. It has no prompt-volume data, few public reviews and a small team. If Copilot matters to your buyers, Otterly, SE Visible, LLMrefs, Rankability or Ahrefs Brand Radar cover it.
What questions should you ask an AI search monitoring provider?๐
Ask these questions before you sign, and get the answers in writing or on the pricing page. They separate a provider that measures carefully from one that sells a dashboard.
- Which engines are on my plan, not just on the website? Several vendors list many engines but gate some to higher tiers or add-ons.
-
How many times does each prompt run per check? One sample per prompt is common. More samples smooth out random variation.
-
How often do checks run, and can I change it? Daily, weekly or on demand, and whether that differs by engine.
-
Can I set the country and language, and does each location cost extra prompts? For a US brand this matters if you also sell into Canada or the UK.
-
How do you count a mention? Ask whether being named fifth counts the same as being named first, and whether a citation without a name counts.
-
Do you show the full answer text and the cited URLs? You need the raw answer to check the tool against what you see yourself.
-
Which competitors can I track, and how many? Competitor share is the most useful number in the report.
-
Can I export the data or get white-label reports? Agencies need this; brands usually need CSV at least.
-
What happens when I hit a limit? Credits that expire, overage fees and per-domain pricing change the real cost.
-
Is there a trial, and does it need a card? Rankability lists a trial that requires a card; TrendlyAI and Otterly do not. Our Rankability review lists what to test before that trial converts.
What are the red flags when choosing a provider?๐
The biggest red flag is a provider that promises rankings in ChatGPT. Nobody controls what an AI engine writes, and we know of no way to buy a spot in ChatGPT's written answer as of November 2026.
Other warning signs:
- No published method. If a provider will not say how it builds its score, you cannot tell whether a change is real. TrendlyAI publishes its methodology.
-
Industry benchmarks with no source. "The average brand scores 32" means nothing unless you know the prompts, engines and sample behind it. See what a good AI visibility score is.
-
Screenshots instead of data. One screenshot of ChatGPT naming a client proves one answer on one day.
-
Engines sold as included that are really add-ons. Read the plan table, not the homepage.
-
Agency retainers with no tool access. If an agency tracks for you, ask for logins or exports so you can check its reporting.
-
Long contracts before a trial. Self-serve tools in this table all publish monthly prices; most let you test before you commit.
Should you hire an agency or use a tool yourself?๐
Use a tool yourself if you have a few hours a month and one to three brands to watch. Hire an agency if you want someone to research prompts, run the tracking and publish the fixes for you.
Agency fees vary widely by scope and region, so ask for a written scope that lists the prompts, engines, report cadence and the work they will do each month. If you are an agency adding this service, our guides to GEO services for SEO consultants and the best AI visibility tools for agencies cover packaging and tools. Small business owners weighing the choice can read AI search optimization for small businesses.
How should you test a provider before you buy?๐
Test a provider by running the same 10 to 25 prompts in its trial that you also ask by hand, then comparing. If the tool says ChatGPT names a competitor first and your own checks agree most of the time, the data is usable.
-
Write 10 to 25 prompts your US buyers ask, with a city or state where location matters.
-
Add two or three competitors you actually lose deals to.
-
Run the trial for at least two scan cycles, so you see more than one snapshot.
-
Ask the same prompts yourself in ChatGPT and Perplexity and note who is named.
-
Check the cited URLs. They tell you what to fix first.
Our step-by-step guide to tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google covers the manual method, and the GEO hub collects every guide. For a quick first read, the free AI visibility check runs 5 prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity in about 30 seconds, with no signup, in your country's language.
Frequently asked questions๐
What is an AI search monitoring provider?๐
It is a company or tool that asks AI engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews a fixed set of buyer questions on a schedule, then reports whether your brand was named, where it appeared, which competitors were named and which sources were cited.
How much does AI search monitoring cost in the US?๐
As of November 2026, self-serve plans we checked start at $19 a month (TrendlyAI Solo), $29 (Otterly.AI Lite), $49 (Rank Prompt Starter) and $97 (Rankability Starter). Higher plans reach about $500 a month. Profound and other enterprise platforms quote custom prices.
Is GEO tracking the same as AI search monitoring?๐
Yes, for buying purposes. GEO tracking, AI visibility tracking and AI search monitoring all describe measuring how AI engines mention and cite a brand. Some vendors use "monitoring" for alerts and "tracking" for trends, but the underlying data is the same.
Which provider tracks Microsoft Copilot?๐
Among the tools above, Otterly.AI includes Copilot in its base engines, and SE Visible, LLMrefs, Rankability and Ahrefs Brand Radar custom prompts list it too, as of November 2026. TrendlyAI does not track Copilot.
Do I need daily AI search monitoring?๐
Most small teams do not. AI answers vary between runs, and most businesses publish one or two changes a month, so weekly data shows whether a fix worked. Daily tracking helps large brands that react to news or run many campaigns.
