Law firms get recommended by ChatGPT and other AI tools when their practice areas, location and reputation are stated clearly and consistently across their own site, Google Business Profile and legal directories like Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Martindale and Super Lawyers. Everything you publish must still meet your state's version of ABA Model Rule 7.1.
Key takeaways๐
- Clients ask AI tools specific questions ("best DUI lawyer in Phoenix who offers free consultations"), so your pages should answer specific questions.
-
Legal directories are the third-party pages assistants can read about you. Claim and complete your profiles.
-
Your Google Business Profile still matters for any prompt with a city in it.
-
Use
LegalServiceschema, not the deprecatedAttorneytype. -
Every claim on your site and profiles has to pass your state bar's rule on misleading communications. "Best" claims and results without context are risky.
What do potential clients ask AI about lawyers?๐
Potential clients ask AI tools about their problem first and the lawyer second. A person rear-ended on I-35 does not start with "personal injury law firm." They start with "what should I do after a car accident in Dallas" and then "do I need a lawyer" and then "best car accident lawyer in Dallas."
Prompts worth testing for a firm:
- "Best personal injury lawyer in Dallas"
-
"Divorce lawyer in Charlotte who handles high-asset cases"
-
"Immigration attorney in Miami that speaks Spanish"
-
"How much does a DUI lawyer cost in Arizona?"
-
"Is [Your Firm] any good? What do reviews say?"
-
"[Your Firm] vs [Other Firm] for a workers' comp claim"
Run each prompt on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google, and note who gets named, which sources are cited and whether your firm is described correctly. Our guide to competitor AI visibility analysis shows how to turn that into a gap list.
How does AI search decide which law firms to name?๐
AI search names law firms it can find described clearly in sources it trusts, which for a local practice means map listings, directories, reviews and the firm's own pages. No vendor publishes its exact method, but the inputs are visible in the answers.
For local prompts, Google Maps data is central on Google's side. Google's Ask Maps feature "analyzes information from over 300 million places, including reviews from our community of more than 500 million contributors" (Google, March 2026). Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and popularity, and says "businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up" (Google Business Profile Help).
ChatGPT added maps for local businesses to its mobile apps in December 2024 (Search Engine Journal), and Perplexity shows its sources next to each answer, which makes it the easiest place to see which directories get read. For broad prompts like "best employment lawyer in Seattle," assistants often lean on directory pages and roundups because those pages already compare firms. See what sources ChatGPT cites for the general pattern.
Which legal directories matter for AI visibility?๐
The legal directories that matter are the large national ones that publish detailed attorney profiles, because they give assistants structured, third-party facts about you. Claim each profile, match your name, address and phone exactly, and fill in practice areas, jurisdictions, languages and fees.
| Directory | What it offers | Cost to list |
|---|---|---|
| Avvo | Attorney profiles, client reviews, the Avvo Rating, and a public Q&A where lawyers answer questions | Free to claim |
| Justia | Lawyer directory with full profiles for licensed US attorneys | Free basic profile |
| FindLaw | National directory of attorneys and firms, searchable by legal issue and location | Check FindLaw for current listing options |
| Martindale-Hubbell | Peer Review Ratings (AV Preeminent, Distinguished, Notable) and client reviews | Peer ratings require a review process |
| Super Lawyers | Selected list; names "the top 5 percent of lawyers in each state" through peer nomination and research | By selection only |
A few notes. FindLaw describes its directory as covering "attorneys and law firms throughout the United States." Super Lawyers says it uses "peer nominations and evaluations... combined with independent research," so you cannot simply sign up. Avvo's Q&A is worth a look: a short, careful answer to a real question in your practice area is a public page with your name on it.
Do not stop at the national directories. Your state and local bar association listings, law school alumni pages and local news coverage of your cases or community work are also pages an assistant may read.
What do bar advertising rules mean for AI optimization?๐
Bar advertising rules apply to everything you publish to win AI recommendations, including FAQ pages, directory profiles and review replies. Each state sets its own rule, and ABA Model Rule 7.1 is the reference point. It says: "A lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer's services. A communication is false or misleading if it contains a material misrepresentation of fact or law, or omits a fact necessary to make the statement considered as a whole not materially misleading" (ABA Model Rule 7.1).
The ABA's comment adds two points that matter for AI-focused content (Comment on Rule 7.1):
- Truthful results can still mislead if they lead a reader "to form an unjustified expectation that the same results could be obtained for other clients in similar matters."
- "An unsubstantiated comparison of the lawyer's or law firm's services or fees with those of other lawyers or law firms, may be misleading."
The comment also says "an appropriate disclaimer or qualifying language may preclude a finding that a statement is likely to create unjustified expectations."
In practice:
- Do not write "the best divorce lawyer in Charlotte" on your own site. Let third parties make comparisons, and quote awards accurately with the year and the organization named.
-
Publish case results with context and the disclaimer your state requires.
-
Keep FAQ answers general and accurate. Answer "how long does probate take in Texas" without promising an outcome.
-
Do not offer anything of value for reviews. Google's policy separately bans reviews posted "due to an incentive offered by a business" (Google Maps content policy).
State rules vary, and some go further than the model rule. Check your state bar's current advertising rules, or ask its ethics hotline, before you publish. This post is not legal advice.
What practical steps get a law firm named by AI?๐
The practical steps are the same ones that make a firm easy to describe: clean listings, clear practice pages, real reviews and outside mentions. Work through them in this order.
-
Fix your Google Business Profile. Use your real-world firm name, as Google's guidelines require (Google guidelines), with the right primary category, hours, practice areas and photos. Google's guidelines also cover profiles for individual practitioners such as lawyers.
-
Claim Apple Business and Bing Places. Apple says place cards appear in "Apple Maps, Messages, Wallet, Siri, and other apps" (Apple Newsroom). Bing Places is free and can import your Google profile (Bing blog).
-
Claim and complete the directories above, with the same name, address and phone number everywhere.
-
Write one page per practice area per city you serve. Open each with a sentence an assistant can lift on its own: "We represent injured workers in workers' compensation claims across Cook County, Illinois." Add fees or fee structure, languages, attorney names and bar admissions.
-
Add an FAQ to each practice page that answers what clients ask AI: cost, timeline, first steps, whether a consultation is free.
-
Mark it up. Schema.org marks the
Attorneytype as deprecated and says "LegalService is more inclusive and less ambiguous" (schema.org/Attorney). Google says to use the most specific LocalBusiness type you can (Google Search Central). Our schema markup guide has examples. -
Ask every client for a Google review, without incentives and without filtering for happy clients.
-
Earn outside mentions. Local news quotes, bar association talks, CLE presentations and guest articles put your name on pages that are not yours.
How do you measure whether it is working?๐
You measure it by running the same set of client prompts on a schedule and counting how often your firm is named, which competitors appear and which sources get cited. One test means little, because answers change from week to week.
Start with 15 to 25 prompts that mix practice area, city and "is [firm] good" style questions. Log the results monthly at least. Our guide to tracking ChatGPT performance over time explains a simple setup.
For a quick first look, the free TrendlyAI check runs 5 prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity in about 30 seconds without a signup. Paid plans track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews weekly and draft fixes such as FAQ pages with schema. I build TrendlyAI, so weigh that. It does not track Gemini, Copilot or Google AI Mode.
How can legal marketing agencies use this?๐
Legal marketing agencies can use AI visibility as an opening for new firm clients. Pick five prompts a prospect's clients would ask, show which competing firms get named and which directories are cited, then point out the missing profiles and thin practice pages. TrendlyAI's pitch audits produce that kind of report for a prospect's domain, and white-label PDF reports let you send it under your own brand. Keep any recommendations inside the bar rules above, since the firm carries the risk.

Frequently asked questions๐
Can a law firm pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?๐
We know of no way to buy a place in ChatGPT's written answer as of October 2026. Firms get named because clear, consistent information about them exists on their own site, their listings and the directories and articles assistants read.
Is Avvo or Super Lawyers more important for AI visibility?๐
They do different jobs. Avvo profiles are free to claim and anyone can complete one. Super Lawyers is selective, naming the top 5 percent of lawyers in each state. Claim everything you can, and list honors you have actually received, with the year.
Does ABA Model Rule 7.1 apply to AI-generated content on my site?๐
Rule 7.1 covers communications about a lawyer's services, and the ABA comment says it "governs all communications about a lawyer's services, including advertising." If AI drafted a page and you published it, treat it as your communication and review it the same way.
What schema type should a law firm use?๐
Use LegalService from schema.org with your name, address, phone, hours and URL. The older Attorney type is marked deprecated in favor of LegalService.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?๐
There is no fixed timeline, and no AI vendor publishes one. Listing fixes are usually the quickest change you can make, while new practice pages and outside mentions build up over months. Track the same prompts monthly to see the trend.
