AI assistants pick local businesses from the same few records they trust: your Google Business Profile, Apple and Bing listings, review sites like Yelp, and your own website. To get named when someone asks "best plumber in Austin," keep those records complete and consistent, earn steady genuine reviews, and add LocalBusiness schema to your site.
Key takeaways๐
- AI answers for local questions lean on map and listing data, so a complete Google Business Profile, Apple Business listing and Bing Places listing come first.
-
Reviews matter twice: Google says they help local ranking, and AI tools quote and summarize them.
-
Your name, address and phone number should match everywhere. Mismatches give an assistant two versions of you to choose between.
-
Add LocalBusiness schema using the most specific type for your trade (Plumber, Dentist, LegalService and so on).
-
Test real prompts with your city in them, on more than one assistant, and track the answers over time.
How do AI assistants choose local businesses?๐
AI assistants choose local businesses by pulling from listing data, reviews and web pages, then writing a short answer on top of them. The details differ by product:
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google added place cards to AI Mode that show "ratings, reviews, and opening hours" for restaurants, salons and stores (Google, May 2025). Google Maps' Ask Maps feature, rolling out in the US, "analyzes information from over 300 million places, including reviews from our community of more than 500 million contributors" (Google, March 2026).
-
ChatGPT. When OpenAI opened search to all logged-in users in December 2024, it added maps to the mobile apps "so you can search for and chat about local restaurants and businesses with up-to-date information" (Search Engine Journal).
-
Perplexity. Perplexity integrated Yelp data in 2024 to show "maps, reviews, photos, and more" for local businesses inside its answers (Maginative).
-
Siri and Apple apps. Apple says businesses can customize how their place card appears "across Apple Maps, Messages, Wallet, Siri, and other apps" (Apple Newsroom).
The pattern is clear even though no vendor publishes its full method. Each assistant reads a structured record (a map listing or a review profile) and then reads the open web to decide who to name. If your record is thin or wrong, you lose before the writing starts.
What prompts do local customers actually ask?๐
Local customers ask AI assistants the same things they used to type into Google, only longer and with more conditions. Examples worth testing for a home services business:
- "Best plumber in Austin"
-
"Emergency plumber near me open on Sunday"
-
"Who fixes tankless water heaters in Round Rock?"
-
"Is [Your Business] good? What do reviews say?"
-
"[Your Business] vs [Competitor] for a bathroom remodel"
Notice the mix. Some prompts are open ("best plumber"), some name a service and a suburb, and some name you directly. You want to show up in the first two kinds and get an accurate summary in the third. Put the city or neighborhood into every test prompt, since "near me" answers depend on where the person asking is.
Which listings matter most for AI search?๐
Google Business Profile, Apple Business and Bing Places are the three listings to claim first, because they feed the maps inside the biggest assistants.
| Listing | Cost | Where it shows up | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free | Google Search, Maps, AI Overviews, AI Mode | Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and popularity |
| Apple Business (formerly Apple Business Connect) | Free | Apple Maps, Siri, Messages, Wallet | Apple calls the tool "free" in its launch post |
| Bing Places for Business | Free | Bing search, Bing Maps | Can import your Google profile; Microsoft says Copilot integration is planned |
| Yelp Business Page | Free to claim | Yelp, plus partners such as Perplexity | Yelp forbids asking customers for reviews |
Google Business Profile๐
Google says three things decide local ranking: relevance, distance and popularity (Google Business Profile Help). The same page says "businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results" and that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking." Fill in every field: primary category, services, service area, hours, holiday hours, attributes, photos and a plain description of what you do.
Follow Google's naming rule. Your profile name should be your "real-world name, as used consistently on your storefront, website, stationery" (Google guidelines). Stuffing "Best Plumber Austin" into the name breaks those guidelines.
Apple Business๐
Apple Business Connect is now part of Apple Business. It lets you claim your place card, which Apple says appears in Maps, Messages, Wallet and Siri. If an iPhone owner asks Siri for a locksmith nearby, this is the record Apple has to work with. Check your hours, phone number, categories and photos there, because many owners set up Google and never touch Apple.
Bing Places๐
Bing Places is "a free online platform where businesses can create and manage their listings to appear in Bing search results and Bing Maps," and its import tool copies your name, hours and contact details from Google (Bing blog, October 2025). If your Google profile is already clean, this is the fastest win on the list.
How much do reviews matter for AI recommendations?๐
Reviews matter a lot, because they are the most common evidence an assistant can quote. Google's own help page ties more reviews and positive ratings to better local ranking, AI Mode place cards display ratings and reviews, and Perplexity pulls review content from Yelp.
What you can do inside the rules:
-
Ask every real customer on Google. Google allows businesses to "solicit or encourage the posting of content that does represent a genuine experience, without offering incentives" (Google Maps content policy).
-
Never pay or discount for reviews. The same policy bans reviews posted "due to an incentive offered by a business," and bans selectively asking only happy customers.
-
Do not ask for Yelp reviews. Yelp says "Yelp has a strict policy against soliciting reviews" (Yelp for Business). Claim the page, keep it accurate and reply to reviews instead.
-
Reply to reviews in plain words. A reply that mentions the service ("thanks for trusting us with your water heater swap in Round Rock") adds context an assistant can read.
Reviews also shape the summary an AI gives when someone asks about you by name. If the last ten reviews all mention slow callbacks, expect that line in the answer.
Does NAP consistency still matter?๐
NAP consistency (matching name, address and phone number) still matters, and it may matter more with AI. An assistant that finds "Smith Plumbing LLC" at one address on Google and "Smith & Sons Plumbing" at an old address on a directory has to guess which is right, or skip you.
A short cleanup list:
- Pick one exact business name and one phone number, and use them on your site, Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp and your industry directories.
-
Update old addresses after a move. Search your old address in quotes to find stale listings.
-
Close duplicate listings rather than leaving them live. Google asks for one profile per location.
-
Make sure your website footer and contact page show the same details.
Industry directories count too. If your trade has a directory customers already use, claim your profile there and keep it matching. See our guides for law firms and dental practices for vertical lists.
Which schema markup helps local businesses?๐
LocalBusiness schema helps by stating your name, address, hours and phone number in a format machines read without guessing. Google's documentation lists name and address as required, recommends telephone, url, geo and openingHoursSpecification, and says to "use the most specific LocalBusiness sub-type possible" (Google Search Central).
So a plumber should use Plumber, a dental office Dentist, and a law firm LegalService. Put the markup on your homepage or on each location page if you have several. Add an FAQ section to your service pages that answers real questions ("Do you charge for estimates?", "Do you service Pflugerville?"), since that gives assistants short passages to lift. Our schema markup guide covers the details.
What should a local business website say?๐
Your website should say plainly what you do, where you do it and for whom, in sentences an assistant can quote. Most small business sites say "quality service you can trust" and little else.
Build one page per core service and one page per main service area, each with:
- A first paragraph that answers the obvious question ("We repair and replace tankless water heaters across Austin, Round Rock and Cedar Park.")
-
Prices or price ranges where you can share them
-
Licenses, years in business and real team names
-
A short FAQ
Then earn mentions elsewhere. Local news, chamber of commerce pages, sponsor lists and "best of" roundups in your city are the third-party pages AI tools tend to read. Our guide on getting cited by ChatGPT explains why outside mentions carry weight.
How do you check if AI recommends your business?๐
You check by asking the assistants your customers use the questions they ask, with your city in the prompt, and writing down who gets named. Do it on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google (AI Overviews and AI Mode) and Siri if you can, since each pulls from different records.
Answers change from week to week, so a single test tells you little. Repeat the same prompts on a schedule, log who gets named each time, and compare.
If you want a quick first read, the free TrendlyAI check runs 5 prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity in about 30 seconds, with no signup. Paid plans track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews weekly. I build TrendlyAI, so weigh that, and note it does not track Google AI Mode, Gemini or Siri. If you are unsure whether to do this yourself, buy a tool or hire help, our guide to AI search optimization for small businesses has a decision table and a 30-day plan.
How can agencies use this with local clients?๐
Agencies that serve local businesses can turn this into a sales conversation. Run the prompts a prospect's customers ask ("best roofer in Tampa"), show which competitors get named and which listings are missing or wrong, and hand over a fix list: claim Apple Business, import to Bing Places, clean up NAP, add schema. TrendlyAI's pitch audits let you run that kind of report on a prospect's domain before they sign, and every plan includes white-label PDF reports.

Frequently asked questions๐
Do I need a website to show up in AI search as a local business?๐
You can show up without one, because assistants read map listings and review sites. A website still helps, since it is the one place you control every word, and it gives assistants service and area details your listing may not hold.
Does Siri use my Google Business Profile?๐
Apple says business place cards managed in Apple Business appear in Apple Maps, Siri, Messages and Wallet. That is a separate listing from Google, so claim and update it on its own.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?๐
We know of no way to buy a spot in ChatGPT's written answer as of October 2026. The route that works is accurate listings, genuine reviews and clear pages that other sites mention.
How often should I check my AI visibility?๐
Check monthly at minimum, and weekly if you are actively changing listings or content. Answers shift often, so a trend across several checks tells you more than one result.
Is "near me" optimization different for AI?๐
The basics are the same: complete listings, reviews and proximity. The difference is that people ask AI longer questions with conditions ("open Sunday," "does tankless heaters"), so your listing and pages should state those details plainly.
