Google Search Console does not report AI Overviews separately, so you need a third-party tool to see if you are cited. SEO suites (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking) track AI Overviews on your keywords. Dedicated trackers (TrendlyAI, Otterly.AI, LLMrefs, SE Visible, Peec AI, Rank Prompt) track them alongside ChatGPT and other engines.
Key takeaways๐
- Google counts AI Overviews clicks inside the "Web" search type in Search Console, so there is no clean AI Overviews report from Google.
-
Tracking AI Overviews means three checks: does an AI Overview appear for the query, is your page cited in it, and is your brand named in the text.
-
SEO suites track AI Overviews per keyword next to your rankings. Dedicated AI visibility tools track them per prompt next to ChatGPT, Perplexity and others.
-
Entry prices run from $19/mo to several hundred dollars a month as of October 2026, depending on whether you already pay for an SEO suite.
-
We build TrendlyAI, so weigh that. Competitor details come from each vendor's own pages.
Why can't you track AI Overviews in Search Console?๐
You cannot track AI Overviews in Search Console because Google mixes them into ordinary search data. Google's documentation says sites appearing in AI features "are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console," reported "in the Performance report, within the 'Web' search type" (Google Search Central). There is no filter for "appeared in an AI Overview" or "cited in an AI Overview."
GA4 does not help either. Clicks from AI Overviews arrive as Organic Search, like any other Google click. Our guide to measuring AI search traffic in GA4 explains what you can and cannot isolate.
So if you want to know whether Google's AI Overview names you, you need a tool that runs the query and reads the answer.
What does tracking Google AI Overviews actually mean?๐
Tracking Google AI Overviews means recording, for each query you care about, whether an AI Overview shows up, which pages it cites, and which brands it names. These are three separate signals, and different tools focus on different ones.
1. Presence๐
Presence is whether Google shows an AI Overview for the query at all. This matters for SEO forecasting: a keyword where an AI Overview appears above your #2 organic ranking may send fewer clicks than it used to. Most SEO suites now flag this as a SERP feature.
2. Citations๐
A citation is a link to a page in the AI Overview's sources. This is the closest thing to "ranking" in an AI Overview. Semrush, for example, records a cited domain as a #1 position in its Position Tracking tool, "regardless of where your page actually ranks in the regular organic results below" (Semrush).
3. Brand mentions๐
A mention is the AI Overview naming your brand in its text. For buying questions like "best accounting software for contractors," this is what the searcher reads. You can be cited without being named (Google quotes your how-to page) and named without being cited (Google pulls your name from a review site). Dedicated AI visibility tools usually report mentions. SEO suites usually focus on citations.
SEO suite or dedicated tracker: which do you need?๐
An SEO suite fits if you already track keywords there and want AI Overviews as one more column. A dedicated tracker fits if you care about buyer questions across several AI engines, not just Google.
The difference is the input. SEO suites start from keywords like "crm for contractors." Dedicated trackers start from prompts like "what CRM should a 10-person contracting business use?" AI Overviews increasingly appear on longer, question-style searches, so prompt-based tracking is closer to how buyers ask. Keyword-based tracking is closer to your existing SEO reporting. Many teams use one of each.
When I set up TrendlyAI's own tracking, I built it around buyer prompts rather than keywords, with weekly scans and 1 sample per prompt per engine. That keeps the price low, but it means TrendlyAI does not replace a daily keyword rank tracker.

Which AI Overviews tracker should you pick?๐
TrendlyAI: for buyer prompts and fixes๐
We build TrendlyAI, so weigh that. TrendlyAI shows whether Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude name your brand or your competitors on your buyer prompts. It flags prompts where a competitor is named and you are not, then drafts fixes: comparison pages, FAQ pages with schema, Reddit answers, llms.txt files, best-of lists and product page rewrites. Later scans detect citations you have won. Plans are Solo $19/mo (1 brand, 25 prompts), Pro $49/mo (3 brands) and Agency $149/mo (10 client brands), with a 7-day free trial and no credit card.
Weak points: only 4 engines, and it does not track Google AI Mode, Gemini, Grok or Copilot. Scans are weekly with 1 sample per prompt, there is no prompt-volume data, and it is a young product from a small team with few public reviews. It is not a keyword rank tracker, so it will not tell you how AI Overviews affect your organic positions.
Semrush: for keyword-level AI Overview citations๐
Semrush's Position Tracking lets you filter by the "AI Overviews" SERP feature to see keywords "that triggered an AI Overview and where your domain appears as a source," per its help page. Position Tracking comes with the SEO plan at $139/mo. For prompt tracking on ChatGPT and AI Mode, Semrush sells the AI Visibility Toolkit at $99/mo per domain, and its Starter ($199/mo) and Pro+ ($299/mo) plans include AI prompt tracking. Read our Semrush AI toolkit alternatives for where it fits.
Ahrefs: for SERP features plus Brand Radar๐
Ahrefs' Rank Tracker lists AI Overview as one of 19 SERP features it tracks. For mentions and citations inside AI answers, Ahrefs sells Brand Radar: custom prompt tracking from $50/mo, or the AI Visibility Index from $199/mo, per its pricing page. Ahrefs Lite starts at $129/mo. Brand Radar covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, with Claude listed as available.
SE Ranking: for agencies already in the suite๐
SE Ranking's AI Overviews Tracker shows whether an AI Overview appears, "where your website ranks within it" and which domains and URLs it uses as sources, per its tracker page. It is part of the AI Search add-on, $89/mo ($71.20/mo billed yearly) on top of a base plan from $129/mo, covering AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and ChatGPT with 75 prompts tracked daily.
SE Visible: for daily AI data without the suite๐
SE Visible is SE Ranking's standalone AI visibility product. Basic is $89/mo ($71 billed yearly) for 75 prompts tracked daily on ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot.
Otterly.AI: for daily checks on a budget๐
Otterly.AI tracks Google AI Overviews by default on every plan, with daily checks. Lite is $29/mo for 15 prompts, and Standard is $189/mo for 100. AI Mode and Gemini are add-ons from $9/mo on Lite. See our Otterly alternative post.
LLMrefs, Peec AI and Rank Prompt๐
LLMrefs includes AI Overviews in its $79/mo plan (500 prompts, at least weekly). Peec AI lists AI Overviews among the models you can pick on its $95/mo Starter plan, with 3 active at a time. Rank Prompt groups AI Overviews with AI Mode as one of its six engines, from $49/mo or a free plan with 10 credits.
How do you track AI Overviews by hand?๐
You can track AI Overviews by hand by searching your key queries in a private browser window each week and logging what you see. For each query, note whether an AI Overview appears, which sites are linked in it, and which brands it names. Location matters, so search from the market you sell in, or use a tool that sets location for you.
This is fine for 10 queries. Beyond that, it gets slow, and a single manual check is only a rough snapshot. Our guide on tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google covers a simple spreadsheet setup.
How do you get into more AI Overviews once you track them?๐
You get into more AI Overviews by improving the pages Google already trusts for the query and by being named on the sites it cites. Start with queries where a competitor is named and you are not. Check which pages the AI Overview links to. Make your own page answer the question plainly near the top, keep facts current, and add structured data where it fits. Our guide to Google AI Overviews optimization covers the steps, and schema markup for AI citations covers structured data. The GEO hub has every guide in one place.
To see how AI engines treat your brand today, run the free AI visibility check. It needs no signup, takes about 30 seconds and runs 5 prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Frequently asked questions๐
Does Google Search Console show AI Overviews traffic?๐
Not separately. Google says sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall search traffic, in the Performance report under the "Web" search type. There is no filter that isolates them, so you need a third-party tracker.
Can Semrush track AI Overviews?๐
Yes. Semrush's Position Tracking can filter your tracked keywords by the AI Overviews SERP feature and show where your domain is cited as a source. A cited domain is recorded as a #1 position. Position Tracking comes with the SEO plan, $139/mo as of October 2026.
Does Ahrefs track AI Overviews?๐
Yes. Ahrefs' Rank Tracker lists AI Overview among its 19 tracked SERP features, and Brand Radar tracks brand mentions and citations in AI Overviews and other AI engines. Brand Radar custom prompts start at $50/mo as of October 2026.
What is the cheapest Google AI Overviews tracker?๐
As of October 2026, the cheapest paid plan we verified that includes AI Overviews is TrendlyAI Solo at $19/mo, followed by Otterly.AI Lite at $29/mo. Rank Prompt also has a free plan with 10 credits.
Is tracking AI Overviews the same as tracking AI Mode?๐
No. AI Overviews appear on top of normal Google results. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience. Some tools track both, some group them together (Rank Prompt), and some track only one. TrendlyAI tracks AI Overviews but not AI Mode.
