Best AEO Tools for Answer Engine Optimization (2026)

By Bhuwan Aryal, founder of TrendlyAIPublished Updated 9 min read

Last updated: November 2026

The best AEO tools in 2026 cover three jobs: tracking whether AI engines name you (TrendlyAI, Otterly, Peec AI, LLMrefs, Semrush), optimizing the content they quote (Frase, Surfer, Writesonic), and fixing technical access (schema validators, llms.txt generators, Cloudflare AI Crawl Control). Most teams need one tool from each group.

Key takeaways馃敆

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?馃敆

Answer engine optimization is the practice of making your content the direct answer a search system gives, and it predates ChatGPT. It began around featured snippets, voice assistants and FAQ schema. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the newer term for getting named and cited inside answers that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews write from many sources.

In 2026 most people use the two terms for the same work, and the tools do not care which label you use. Our full breakdown of answer engine optimization vs GEO covers the history and where the tactics differ. If you are new to the GEO side, start with what generative engine optimization is.

What kinds of AEO tools do you need?馃敆

An AEO tool stack has three layers, and each answers a different question:

  1. Visibility tracking: "Do AI engines name us, and who do they name instead?"

  2. Content optimization: "Is this page easy for an engine to quote?"

  3. Technical access: "Can AI crawlers reach our pages, and do they understand our structured data?"

Skip the first layer and you are guessing. Skip the third and good content may never be read. The sections below list tools for each, with prices from each vendor's own site as of October 2026.

Which AEO tools track visibility in AI answers?馃敆

Visibility trackers run a set of buyer questions (prompts) through AI engines on a schedule and record which brands are named and which pages are cited.

TrendlyAI馃敆

TrendlyAI shows whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews name your brand or your competitors, finds gaps where a competitor is recommended and you are not, and drafts fixes for each gap (comparison pages, FAQ pages with schema, Reddit answers, llms.txt, best-of lists, product page rewrites). Later scans detect citations you have won.

Pricing starts at $19/mo for 1 brand and 25 prompts, with Pro at $49/mo and Agency at $149/mo. There is a 7-day free trial with no credit card. Weak points: 4 engines only (no Gemini, Grok, Copilot or Google AI Mode), weekly scans with 1 sample per prompt, no prompt-volume data, and a young product with few public reviews. Our methodology page explains how scans work.

Otterly.AI馃敆

Otterly's Lite plan is $29/mo for 15 prompts, tracking ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot, with Claude, AI Mode and Gemini as paid add-ons. Standard is $189/mo for 100 prompts. It has a 7-day free trial with no credit card. See our Otterly alternative post for a closer look.

Peec AI馃敆

Peec AI starts at $95/mo (Starter) for 50 prompts across ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Gemini and Naver AI, with shareable dashboards and CSV exports. You pick 3 active models; Perplexity is a paid add-on model, and Claude and Grok are listed on Enterprise. We compare it in our Peec AI alternative post.

LLMrefs馃敆

LLMrefs has one All in One plan at $79/mo with 500 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, Copilot and Meta AI, refreshed weekly. It includes an AI crawlability checker, a Reddit threads finder and an llms.txt generator, and has a 7-day free trial with no credit card.

Semrush馃敆

Semrush includes daily AI prompt tracking from its Starter plan, which bundles SEO and AI search: $199/mo billed monthly ($165.17/mo billed annually), with 50 prompts tracked daily. Its SEO plan ($139/mo) includes lighter AI visibility reports. It makes sense if you already run Semrush for SEO.

Profound馃敆

Profound offers a free 7-day trial (50 prompts tracked daily on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews) and an Enterprise plan with custom pricing covering up to 9 engines. It is built for large brands with a sales-led buying process.

Goodie sits in the same tier with public prices: its Core plan is $295/mo billed yearly for 110 prompts on 5 engines, per its pricing page as of November 2026. See Goodie AI alternatives.

For a side-by-side of the three best-known trackers, see Profound vs Peec vs Otterly.

Which AEO tools help optimize content?馃敆

Content optimization tools score a draft against what ranks and gets quoted, then suggest edits. Several now include AI visibility tracking, which blurs the line with the first group.

Frase馃敆

Frase includes "SEO and GEO scores" for content on every paid plan. Starter is $49/mo ($39/mo yearly) with 10 articles a month and AI visibility on ChatGPT and Google AI. Professional ($129/mo, $103/mo yearly) adds Perplexity and AI crawler monitoring, and Scale ($299/mo, $239/mo yearly) adds Claude and Gemini. There is a 7-day free trial with no credit card.

Surfer馃敆

Surfer's Content Editor starts on the Discovery plan at $59/mo for 120 documents, without the AI Tracker. Standard at $119/mo adds an AI Tracker with 25 prompts refreshed weekly, on ChatGPT only. There is also a tracker-only AI Search Analytics plan at $95/mo billed monthly ($82/mo billed yearly) for 50 to 200 prompts refreshed daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Gemini.

Writesonic馃敆

Writesonic's Starter plan at $99/mo billed monthly ($79/mo billed annually) pairs 15 AI articles a month and 10 site audits with 50 prompts tracked daily on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Perplexity, Claude, Grok and Copilot are listed on Enterprise only.

At the enterprise end, AirOps combines content agents with AI search tracking but lists no public prices. Our AirOps alternatives post compares it with tools you can price up front.

What matters more than the tool馃敆

No content score replaces a page that answers the question in its first sentence, uses specific numbers, and states who it is for. Engines quote passages, so each section should make sense on its own. Our guide to a content strategy for AI citations covers the patterns, and how to get cited by ChatGPT covers off-site work like reviews and Reddit that content tools do not touch.

Which technical AEO tools check schema, llms.txt and crawler access?馃敆

Technical AEO tools make sure AI crawlers can reach your pages and read your structured data. Most of the useful ones are free.

Schema: Google Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator馃敆

Google's Rich Results Test checks whether your structured data qualifies for Google rich results, and the Schema Markup Validator checks any schema.org markup. Both are free. Use them on FAQ, product, organization and review markup, but note that FAQ markup no longer earns rich results in Google Search (Google stopped showing them from May 7, 2026), so the Rich Results Test will not report it as eligible. Our post on schema markup for AI citations explains which types to prioritize.

llms.txt: Yoast, Rank Math and TrendlyAI's generator馃敆

An llms.txt file is a plain-text map of your most important pages, written for language models. Yoast says its llms.txt feature is "free for everyone" in the Yoast SEO plugin. Rank Math also has an llms.txt module for WordPress. If you are not on WordPress, TrendlyAI's free llms.txt generator builds a file you can upload. Treat llms.txt as cheap housekeeping, not a guaranteed visibility lever.

Crawler access: Cloudflare AI Crawl Control馃敆

Cloudflare AI Crawl Control shows which AI crawlers visit your site, how often, and whether they follow your robots.txt, and lets you allow or block each crawler. Cloudflare's docs say it is available on all plans, including free, with fewer features on free (24 hours of metrics and user-agent-based detection). This is the fastest way to confirm you are not blocking the crawlers you want, such as OpenAI's or Perplexity's.

Crawlability checkers馃敆

LLMrefs includes an AI crawlability checker in its paid plan. Frase lists AI crawler monitoring from its Professional plan. Either can catch pages that AI crawlers cannot fetch.

How should you build an AEO tool stack on a budget?馃敆

Start with the free technical tools, because they fix problems that make every other tool less useful. Check your schema, publish an llms.txt file, and confirm in Cloudflare or your server logs that AI crawlers are not blocked. Then add one visibility tracker so you know which prompts you are losing and to whom. Add a content tool last, once you know which pages to rewrite.

When I set up TrendlyAI's own tracking, our score was low, and we publish it. The tracker's job was not to make the number look good. It was to show which competitors got named and which pages to write next. For the full playbook, see our GEO hub.

To see where you stand before you buy anything, run a free AI visibility check. It needs no signup, takes about 30 seconds, and runs 5 prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Frequently asked questions馃敆

What is an AEO tool?馃敆

An AEO tool helps your brand become the answer that AI and search engines give. That includes tools that track whether ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews name you, tools that optimize content to be quoted, and technical tools for schema, llms.txt and AI crawler access.

Are AEO tools and GEO tools the same thing?馃敆

Mostly, yes. AEO began with featured snippets and voice assistants, and GEO focuses on generative AI answers, but in 2026 the same trackers and content tools serve both. See AEO vs GEO for the differences.

What is the cheapest AEO tracking tool?馃敆

As of October 2026, TrendlyAI starts at $19/mo and Otterly's Lite plan at $29/mo. Free checkers from TrendlyAI, Ahrefs, Semrush and HubSpot give a one-time snapshot at no cost. Our TrendlyAI vs HubSpot AEO Grader comparison explains what HubSpot's free grader measures and what its paid tracker costs.

Do I need llms.txt for AEO?馃敆

It is cheap and quick to add, and Yoast and TrendlyAI offer free ways to create one. It is not a guaranteed way to get cited. Content quality, third-party mentions and crawler access matter more.

Which free AEO tools should I use first?馃敆

Use Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator for structured data, Cloudflare AI Crawl Control to confirm AI crawlers can reach your site, and a free AI visibility check to see whether engines name you today.
