How restaurants and hotels show up in AI answers

Restaurants and hotels show up in AI answers when assistants can read accurate, specific facts about them: a complete Google Business Profile with current hours, menu or amenities, active profiles on Yelp, Tripadvisor and OpenTable, genuine reviews, and Restaurant or Hotel schema on the website. Vague or outdated details get skipped or repeated wrong.

Key takeaways๐Ÿ”—

What do diners and travelers ask AI?๐Ÿ”—

Diners and travelers ask AI tools for a short list that matches several conditions at once. Google's own Ask Maps example is a person asking for "spots with a cozy aesthetic and a table for 4 at 7 tonight" between two neighborhoods (Google, March 2026). That is very different from typing "restaurants near me."

Prompts worth testing for a restaurant in Chicago:

And for a hotel in Nashville:

Run each prompt on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google, and note who gets named, which sites are cited and whether your hours, prices and amenities are right. Our guide to competitor AI visibility analysis shows how to turn the results into a gap list.

Where do AI tools get information about restaurants and hotels?๐Ÿ”—

AI tools get information about restaurants and hotels from map listings, review and booking platforms, and the business's own website. Each assistant leans on a different mix.

For "best [cuisine] in [city]" prompts, assistants also cite pages that already compare places: local food guides, newspaper roundups, Reddit threads and review sites. Our posts on what sources ChatGPT cites and Reddit citations in AI answers cover that side.

Can AI book a table at my restaurant?๐Ÿ”—

Google's AI Mode can find restaurant reservations for some users through booking partners. In August 2025 Google said the agentic experience was "rolling out for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S." and that it works with "OpenTable, Resy, Tock, Ticketmaster, StubHub, SeatGeek, Booksy and many more" (Google). Users give party size, date, time, location and cuisine, and AI Mode looks for real-time availability across platforms and links to the booking page.

Two things follow. First, if you take reservations, being bookable on a major platform puts your open tables where AI tools can see them. Second, availability only helps if the rest of your record matches the request: cuisine, price range, dietary options and atmosphere still decide which restaurants make the short list.

Which platforms matter for restaurants and hotels?๐Ÿ”—

Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor and OpenTable are the platforms to manage first. Hotels should add their own booking channels, but the review profiles below are where most third-party facts about you live.

PlatformBest forWhy it matters for AI answersWhat to do
Google Business ProfileRestaurants and hotelsFeeds Google Search, Maps, AI Overviews and AI Mode place cardsComplete every field; Google says "complete and accurate info are more likely to show up"
YelpRestaurants mainlyData source for Perplexity's local answersClaim your free page; do not ask for reviews, as Yelp "has a strict policy against soliciting reviews"
TripadvisorHotels and restaurants in travel marketsLarge review base for travelers comparing placesClaiming a listing is free; update details and reply to reviews
OpenTableRestaurants that take reservationsNamed reservation partner for Google AI ModeKeep availability, cuisine and price range current
Apple Business ConnectBothPlace cards in Apple Maps and SiriFree; add photos and reservation or order links

A few notes. OpenTable has limited reviews to diners who were seated through a reservation for years, using its system that "can monitor which patrons have actually been seated" (TechCrunch, 2008), so those reviews grow only as you take bookings there. Tripadvisor listings can be claimed for free by an owner or manager after a phone verification (BrightLocal).

Review rules apply everywhere. Google bans reviews posted "due to an incentive offered by a business - such as payment, discounts, free goods" (Google Maps content policy), so a free dessert for a review is out. The FTC's 2024 rule also bans fake reviews and lets the agency "seek civil penalties against knowing violators" (FTC, August 2024).

Why do menus, hours and amenities matter so much?๐Ÿ”—

Menus, hours and amenities matter because they are the conditions people put in their prompts. If a diner asks for "gluten-free options open after 10 p.m." and your menu is a blurry photo and your holiday hours are wrong, an assistant has nothing to match.

For restaurants:

For hotels:

What schema should restaurants and hotels use?๐Ÿ”—

Restaurants should use the schema.org Restaurant type and hotels should use Hotel, each with the properties that answer common questions. Google recommends "the most specific LocalBusiness sub-type possible," naming Restaurant as an example (Google Search Central).

Useful properties, with schema.org's own definitions:

Add name, address, phone, hours, price range and URL to both, and keep every value identical to your Google profile. Our schema markup guide has full examples.

What practical steps get a restaurant or hotel named by AI?๐Ÿ”—

The practical steps are the ones that make your place easy to match to a detailed request. Work through them in this order.

  1. Complete your Google Business Profile: category, hours, holiday hours, attributes, photos, and the menu editor or Hotel details.

  2. Claim Yelp, Tripadvisor, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places, with the same name, address and phone everywhere. Bing Places is free and can import your Google profile (Bing blog).

  3. Be bookable. Restaurants: keep reservations on a major platform current. Hotels: keep rates and availability current on your own site and booking channels.

  4. Publish an HTML menu or a plain-text policies page. Open with a sentence an assistant can lift: "We serve Neapolitan pizza and natural wine in Logan Square, Chicago, open until midnight Friday and Saturday."

  5. Add an FAQ covering reservations, dietary options, parking, kids, pets and private events.

  6. Add Restaurant or Hotel schema with the properties above.

  7. Ask guests for Google reviews without incentives and without filtering. Reply to reviews, good and bad.

  8. Earn local press. Food guides, "best of" lists from local outlets and travel articles are the comparison pages assistants like to cite.

How do you measure whether it is working?๐Ÿ”—

You measure it by running the same set of guest prompts on a schedule and counting how often your place is named, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. Answers change from week to week, so log results at least monthly.

Our guide to tracking ChatGPT performance over time explains a simple setup. For a quick first look, the free TrendlyAI check runs 5 prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity in about 30 seconds with no signup. Paid plans track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews weekly and draft fixes such as FAQ pages with schema. I build TrendlyAI, so weigh that. It does not track Gemini, Copilot or Google AI Mode, which is where Google's reservation feature lives.

How can hospitality marketing agencies use this?๐Ÿ”—

Hospitality marketing agencies can use AI visibility to show restaurant groups and hotels a problem they cannot see from their own dashboards. Pick five prompts a prospect's guests would ask, show which competitors get named and which guides and review sites are cited, then point to the missing menu text, wrong hours or empty amenity fields. TrendlyAI's pitch audits build that kind of report for a prospect's domain, and white-label PDF reports let you send it under your own brand.

Frequently asked questions๐Ÿ”—

We know of no way to buy a place in ChatGPT's written answer as of October 2026. Places get named because clear, current information about them exists on their own site, their listings, review platforms and the guides assistants read.

Does my restaurant need to be on OpenTable to show up in AI answers?๐Ÿ”—

No. OpenTable is one of the reservation partners Google named for AI Mode's booking feature, alongside Resy and Tock, but restaurants without reservations still get recommended based on their listings, reviews and coverage.

Is a PDF menu good enough?๐Ÿ”—

A PDF is better than no menu, but text is easier to read for both people and crawlers. Use Google's menu editor on your profile and publish an HTML menu on your site.

What schema should a hotel use?๐Ÿ”—

Use Hotel from schema.org, a type of LodgingBusiness, with name, address, phone, URL, checkinTime, checkoutTime, amenityFeature and petsAllowed. Match your Google profile exactly.

Can I give a free drink for a review?๐Ÿ”—

No. Google's policy bans reviews posted because of an incentive such as discounts or free goods, and the FTC's 2024 rule bans incentives tied to positive or negative reviews.
