Plumbers, HVAC companies and other home service pros get named in AI search when assistants can find a complete, consistent record of them: a full Google Business Profile with the right service area, genuine reviews on Google, Yelp, Angi and Nextdoor, service pages that answer cost and timing questions, and specific schema like Plumber or HVACBusiness.
Key takeaways๐
- Homeowners ask AI tools urgent, specific questions ("emergency plumber in Mesa open Sunday"), so your listings must show real hours, services and areas.
-
Your Google Business Profile is the base record. Service-area businesses should hide their home address and set the areas they cover.
-
Google replaced the Google Guaranteed badge on Local Services Ads with a single Google Verified badge on October 20, 2025, and the money-back guarantee ended.
-
Reviews matter on several platforms, and each one has different rules. Yelp says not to ask for reviews at all.
-
Schema.org has specific types for trades:
Plumber,HVACBusiness,Electrician,RoofingContractorand more.
What do homeowners ask AI about plumbers and HVAC companies?๐
Homeowners ask AI tools about the problem first, then the price, then who to call. A homeowner with no heat in January asks "why is my furnace blowing cold air," then "how much does a furnace repair cost," then "HVAC company near me open today."
Prompts worth testing for a home services business in Phoenix:
- "Best plumber in Phoenix"
-
"Emergency plumber in Mesa open on Sunday"
-
"AC repair in Scottsdale same day"
-
"How much does it cost to replace a water heater in Arizona?"
-
"HVAC company in Chandler that does financing"
-
"Is [Your Company] a good plumber? What do reviews say?"
-
"[Your Company] vs [Competitor] for a new AC install"
Put the city or suburb in each prompt, because "near me" answers depend on where the person asking is standing. Run each one on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google, and note who gets named, which sites are cited and whether your hours and service area are right. Our guide to competitor AI visibility analysis shows how to turn the results into a list of gaps.
Where do AI tools get information about home service businesses?๐
AI tools get information about home service businesses from map listings, review platforms, lead marketplaces and company websites. Each assistant leans on a different mix.
- Google. AI Mode shows place cards for local businesses with "ratings, reviews, and opening hours" (Google, May 2025). Ask Maps "analyzes information from over 300 million places, including reviews from our community of more than 500 million contributors" (Google, March 2026). In August 2025 Google said agentic features in AI Mode would expand to "local service appointments" after restaurant reservations (Google).
-
ChatGPT. OpenAI added maps to the ChatGPT mobile apps in December 2024 so people can "search for and chat about local restaurants and businesses" (Search Engine Journal).
-
Perplexity. Perplexity integrated Yelp data in 2024 to show local business "maps, reviews, photos, and more" (Maginative).
-
Siri. Apple says business place cards appear across "Apple Maps, Messages, Wallet, Siri, and other apps" (Apple Newsroom).
For "best plumber in [city]" prompts, assistants often cite pages that already compare companies, such as review sites, marketplace directories and local roundups. Our post on what sources ChatGPT cites explains the general pattern.
How should a home services company set up its Google Business Profile?๐
A home services company should set up its Google Business Profile as a service-area business with its real name, the right primary category, accurate hours and the areas it actually covers. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and says businesses with "complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results" (Google Business Profile Help).
Three rules trip up trades businesses most often (Google guidelines):
- Hide your address if customers do not come to you. Google says businesses that travel to customers must "hide your business address from customers." Its own example is a plumber working from a home address.
-
Use your real-world name. No keywords added to the name. "Smith Plumbing" is fine. "Smith Plumbing Best Emergency Plumber Phoenix" breaks the rules and risks suspension.
-
Pick few, accurate categories. Google says to use "as few categories as possible to describe your overall core business."
Then fill in everything else: services with short descriptions, hours (including after-hours if you truly answer the phone), photos of real jobs and your trucks, and answers to common questions. Google also says "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking." Our guide to Google AI Overviews optimization covers the search side in more detail.
Do Local Services Ads and the Google Verified badge help with AI search?๐
Local Services Ads are paid lead ads, and Google says there is "no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google" in its organic local results (Google Business Profile Help). We have seen no evidence that running them changes what ChatGPT or Perplexity write about you, so treat them as a separate channel.
The details still matter if you run them. Google says that with Local Services Ads you "pay only for leads related to your business and the services you offer," and that the Local Services unit "is shown prominently in Google Search results when people search for the services you offer in areas you've chosen" (Google Local Services Help). You submit licenses or business registration, and businesses that pass Google's screening get a Google Verified badge.
That badge is new. Google replaced the Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google badges with a single Google Verified badge effective October 20, 2025, and said "the Money Back Guarantee associated with the Google Guarantee badge will also be discontinued" (Search Engine Roundtable). If your website or truck wraps still say "Google Guaranteed," update them. An assistant reading an outdated claim can repeat it, and a customer who asks about the old guarantee will be confused.
Which review sites and directories matter for home services?๐
Google, Yelp, Angi and Nextdoor are the platforms to manage first, because they hold the reviews and recommendations assistants are most likely to read for local trades.
| Platform | Why it matters | How reviews work | Rule to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Feeds Google Search, Maps, AI Overviews and AI Mode | Anyone with a Google account can review | You may ask for reviews, but no incentives and no asking only happy customers (policy) |
| Yelp | Data source for Perplexity's local answers | Anyone with a Yelp account can review | Yelp says it "has a strict policy against soliciting reviews" |
| Angi | Lead marketplace that shows pros' profiles with "past Customer Ratings & Reviews" | Ratings and reviews are shown to homeowners with each match | Leads go to several pros at once, so speed of reply matters |
| Nextdoor | Neighbor recommendations; Nextdoor reports "55M recommendations for businesses made by neighbors" | Neighbors recommend businesses | Claim your free Business Page |
| Bing Places | Listing in Bing search results and Bing Maps | Not covered here | Free, and can import your Google profile |
A few notes. Angi's pro page says a homeowner's request and contact details are "sent immediately to 3-4 Angi Leads members," so if you buy leads there, the first company to call back has an edge. Nextdoor recommendations come from neighbors in plain language, which is the kind of endorsement that reads well in an AI summary.
Federal rules apply across all of them. The FTC's 2024 rule bans fake reviews and incentives "conditioned on the writing of consumer reviews expressing a particular sentiment, either positive or negative," and lets the FTC "seek civil penalties against knowing violators" (FTC, August 2024). A discount for any review, good or bad, still breaks Google's policy, so the simplest rule is no incentives at all.
What schema should plumbers and HVAC companies use?๐
Plumbers and HVAC companies should use the most specific schema.org type that matches their trade. HomeAndConstructionBusiness is described as a business that "provides services around homes and buildings," and its subtypes include Electrician, GeneralContractor, HVACBusiness, HousePainter, Locksmith, MovingCompany, Plumber and RoofingContractor (schema.org/HomeAndConstructionBusiness).
Google recommends "the most specific LocalBusiness sub-type possible" (Google Search Central). For a company that does both plumbing and HVAC, pick the type that matches your main Google category and describe the other services on their own pages.
Include your name, phone, URL, hours and areaServed, which schema.org defines as "the geographic area where a service or offered item is provided" (schema.org/areaServed). Keep every value identical to your Google profile. Our schema markup guide has full examples.
What practical steps get a home services company named by AI?๐
The practical steps are the ones that make your company easy to describe and easy to trust. Work through them in this order.
-
Fix your Google Business Profile as a service-area business, with your real name, few categories, true hours and the areas you serve.
-
Claim Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp and Nextdoor. All four offer free business pages. Use the same name, phone and service area everywhere.
-
Update badge claims. Replace any "Google Guaranteed" wording with what is true today.
-
Write one page per service per main city. Open each with a sentence an assistant can lift: "We repair and replace tank and tankless water heaters across Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler, Arizona, with same-day service most weekdays."
-
Publish real price ranges where you can. Homeowners ask AI "how much does it cost." A page that gives a typical range and explains what changes the price gives an assistant something concrete to quote.
-
Add an FAQ to each service page covering cost, timing, warranties, licensing and financing.
-
Add
Plumber,HVACBusinessor the right subtype withareaServed. -
Ask every customer for a Google review, without incentives and without filtering. On Yelp, do not ask.
-
Earn outside mentions. Local news tips on frozen pipes, sponsorships and trade association listings put your name on pages you do not own.
How do you measure whether it is working?๐
You measure it by running the same set of homeowner prompts on a schedule and counting how often your company is named, which competitors appear and which sources get cited. Answers change from week to week, so a single test tells you little.
Start with 15 to 25 prompts that mix service, city and "is [company] good" questions, and log them monthly at least. Our guide to tracking ChatGPT performance over time explains a simple setup. For a quick first look, the free TrendlyAI check runs 5 prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity in about 30 seconds with no signup. Paid plans track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews weekly and draft fixes such as FAQ pages with schema. I build TrendlyAI, so weigh that. It does not track Gemini, Copilot or Google AI Mode.
How can home services marketing agencies use this?๐
Home services marketing agencies can use AI visibility to open a new conversation with contractors who already buy leads and ads. Pick five prompts a prospect's customers would ask, show which competitors get named and which review sites are cited, then point to the missing listings, the outdated badge claims and the thin service pages. TrendlyAI's pitch audits build that kind of report for a prospect's domain, and white-label PDF reports let you send it under your own brand.

Frequently asked questions๐
Does running Local Services Ads get my company into ChatGPT answers?๐
We have seen no evidence that it does. Local Services Ads are a paid lead product inside Google Search, and Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. ChatGPT and Perplexity write their answers from pages, listings and reviews they can read.
Is Google Guaranteed still available?๐
No. Google replaced Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google with a single Google Verified badge on October 20, 2025, and the money-back guarantee was discontinued.
Should a plumber show a street address on Google?๐
Only if customers visit that address during business hours. Google's guidelines say businesses that travel to customers should hide their address and set a service area instead.
What schema type should an HVAC company use?๐
Use HVACBusiness, a subtype of HomeAndConstructionBusiness on schema.org. Add your name, phone, hours, URL and areaServed, and match your Google profile exactly.
Can I offer a discount for reviews?๐
No. Google's policy bans reviews posted because of an incentive, Yelp says not to solicit reviews at all, and the FTC's 2024 rule bans incentives tied to positive or negative reviews.
